Plants grow on a number of micronutrients, but the three common ingredients found in commercial fertilizers include nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, also known as NPK.
And all of these essential nutrients are probably already in your home. If you don’t want to buy commercial fertilizers for your plants, you can use the ones you already have on hand.
Here we share a list of five foods that you probably have in your kitchen that you can use instead of buying fertilizer.
The coffee grounds contain about 2% nitrogen, 0.06% phosphorus and 0.6% potassium by volume. They also contain many other micronutrients such as calcium, magnesium, boron, copper, iron, and zinc.
You can sprinkle it on the earth in a layer of half a centimeter and work it with your hands.
As an added bonus, many gardeners say that coffee beans can act as a pest repellent for snails and slugs.
The eggshells contain calcium, which plays an important role in the strength and thickness of the cell walls of plants. Chopped eggshells contain on average 39.15% calcium, 0.4% nitrogen and 0.38% magnesium.
You can wash the eggshells or let them dry in the sun. You can also make a liquid fertilizer by using your husks in a jar filled with water. After four weeks in the water, you are ready to start fertilizing.
Add a cup of this mixture to 5 liters of water and water your plants.
For a dry fertilizer, take the dried eggshells and mix or mash them. Powdered eggshell will speed up the fertilization process. Either powdered or in small pieces, sprinkle them in the soil around your plants. We recommend that you use 4-5 eggs for each plant you want to fertilize. Mix the peels with the earth and add water.
Milk contains the three common ingredients found in fertilizers. As we all know, it is also a healthy source of calcium. Researchers have recently suggested that it can be used as a substitute for fertilizers on farms.
To use milk as a fertilizer, combine 50% milk or powdered milk with 50% water. Pour the mixture around the roots of the plants for best results. You can also apply the solution to the leaves of the plants using a spray bottle.
Using fish scraps as a fertilizer will help provide the three common nutrients found in fertilizer. Fish are especially good at increasing nitrogen.
You can grind up the fish scraps to make your own fertilizer. Put it in the ground and bury the pieces of fish next to the roots of the plants.
Alternatively, you can make a mixture containing one part fish, three parts sawdust, and a bottle of sulfur-free molasses. Put these ingredients in a covered container for about two weeks until the fish breaks down. Make sure to stir the mixture daily.
When you’re ready to use this in your garden, you can use about a tablespoon of the mixture for every 5 liters of water. You can spray it on the leaves of your plants or at their base.
The banana peels may contain up to 42% of potassium and up to 25% phosphorus. Other beneficial nutrients in the peel include calcium, magnesium, and sulfur.
There are several ways to use banana peels as a fertilizer for your garden or vegetable garden. You can soak them in a jar and use the water in the jar as fertilizer.
If you have them in the jar, make sure that the banana peels are completely submerged or else they will become moldy. Keep the banana peels in the water for a week. You can use this mixture with five parts of water and water your plants as you normally would.
Alternatively, you can dry the shells for a day in the sun and chop them into small pieces. Add them to the soil anywhere on the surface about 5-10 cm deep.
