A new competitor has emerged for the large solar roofing firms for homes, in the case of Tesla. This is Forward Labs, an American startup that has launched a new solution that incorporates an optical layer thanks to which the solar installation is completely integrated into the roof without the aesthetics diminishing its efficiency, which, the creators claim, is one of the most market high.
To do this, this roof installation is made up of five layers, one of which is made up of high-efficiency, long-life polycrystalline solar cells. Two of the novelties that differentiate these panels from the rest of the proposals are located one layer above and another below the monocrystalline cells. Thus, on top, a layer of chromatic optical film has been incorporated , which allows the panel to adopt almost any color. “It is practically impossible to distinguish” from the roof, says Taylor in this video, in which you can check the results of the sheet. Above it, in the upper part of the panel, there is a glass designed to have maximum durability and to protect the rest of the installation from storms, hail and other possible threats to its stability.
The other difference that Forward Labs establishes with respect to the competition is under the layer of solar cells, where a galvanized metal panel is located that is made up of a single piece, which reduces costs and speeds up assembly tasks. In addition, the last part of this roof is formed by the storage system, which guarantees its invisibility and transfers the wiring inside the house.
As the company points out among the technical characteristics of its roof panels, these offer an energy density of 19 watts per square foot (slightly less than a square decimeter), compared to 11 watts of other solutions, whose price is also at the 11 dollars, above the 8.5 to which the square foot of these panels is offered. Another of its strengths compared to the competition is the time required for installation, which is reduced to between two or three days, compared to the five or seven required for other assemblies.
