On the border between Canada and the United States, the tourist zone gains a transport free of polluting emissions.
Waterfall or cataract. When a clean stream runs free over a mountain, the beauty is always mesmerizing. An example of this wonder of nature is the Niagara Falls, located on the border between Canada and the United States, which will now win boats free of polluting emissions.
Like the Iguazu Falls, on the border between the Misiones province and the Brazilian state of Paraná, the Niagara Falls also receive thousands of visitors every day, 1.6 million people a year. Among the agencies that operate sightseeing boat tours, Maid of the Mist will launch 100% electric ferries.
In addition to not emitting polluting gases, they will provide a more pleasant route for passengers and local fauna, since they will navigate without noise. Initially, two electric catamarans will be put into use.
The technology includes lithium-ion batteries and a land-based charging system, allowing sustainable operation in complete safety.
As an added bonus, the new ferries will use all the electricity needed to charge their 316 kWh batteries using zero-emission hydroelectric power, while passengers get on and off the ship. The seven-minute charge provides more than enough power for the ship’s two electric propulsion motors to produce a total of 400 kW | 563 CV.
“We are delighted to be the first US shipping company to add 100% electric ferries to our fleet. We have chosen ABB to support us on our journey towards more sustainable work based on their unprecedented experience in marine systems integration, as well as efficient and innovative technologies for sustainable transport. “
Christopher M. Glynn, President of Maid of the Mist Corp.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo commented on the news:
“Maid of the Mist has been offering tours of the famous Niagara Falls and Niagara River Gorge for more than a century, and is a major tourist attraction in Western New York. The new zero-emission ships will continue that proud tradition while joining forces to make New York State a major environmentally friendly tourist destination. “
Designed by Propulsion Data Systems, the new vessels are scheduled to enter into operation from September.
