Rivian, a US- based electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced the features of its first vehicle: the R1T electric pickup. The five-passenger R1T is designed to be as comfortable on dirt roads as it is on paved roads.
Rivian has spent most of the last decade developing its first vehicles – the R1T pickup and the R1S SUV, which it unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show. So far only the features of the R1T have been unveiled, though in terms of performance, range and technical features, the truck is remarkable. The R1T is equipped with four electric motors, each rated at 147 kW.
Three possibilities will be offered for the battery pack: a 180 kWh battery that is expected to provide more than 650 km of range per charge, a 135 kWh option that offers more than 480 km of range per charge, and a 105 kWh variant , which will provide more than 370 km of autonomy.
Rivian plans to start manufacturing the R1T’s high-end options first, followed by the entry-level version, which starts at $69,000 within 12 months of starting production. Production of the R1T is expected to begin in 2020.
Rivian R1T has the ability to wade up to 1 meter of water. The truck, while comparable in size to the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma, also outperforms its competition in terms of towing capacity. Thanks to its four electric motors, the R1T has a towing capacity of 5,000 kilos, a figure that is more comparable to America’s best-selling vehicle, the largest Ford F-150.
There is also plenty of storage space, 330 liters, and a “gear tunnel” – a storage area that spans the entire width of the vehicle – that provides 350 liters of space. Rivian notes that the tunnel would be perfect for storing items such as skis, fishing rods and golf bags. The truck is also equipped with three 110-volt power outlets with over 400 watts available in each, as well as a compressed air motor.
Like Tesla’s electric cars, the R1T offers impressive acceleration, with the entry-level truck reaching 100 kilometers per hour in 4.9 seconds and the 185 kWh top-tier variant going from 0 to 100 in. 3.2 seconds. Interestingly, the 135 kWh mid-tier variant of the R1T is the fastest, with a 0-100 km / h time of 3 seconds. All three versions of the vehicle have a top speed of 200 km / h, similar to that of the mid-range 3 RWD model.
The vehicle is equipped with a 15.6 ″ central touch screen, as well as a 12.3 inch screen that replaces the instrument panel. A 6.8-inch touchscreen is located at the rear of the center console, allowing rear passengers access to information and entertainment and climate control. The R1T’s steering wheel also features two thumb dials, just like the Model 3. Lastly, the R1T is equipped with hardware that allows it to be fully autonomous in the future, thanks to a series of cameras, radar, ultrasound and high precision GPS technologies.
