La Caja Verde, the refrigerator for vegetables without electricity

Tali Signorile, Plastic Artist, and Héctor Pereyra, Architect, want with their work to teach people to take advantage of energy resources and minimize greenhouse gas emissions, save money and live healthily by consuming well-preserved food. To achieve this they have designed and manufactured this refrigerator, without cold for fruits and vegetables.

The Green Box

Made with multilaminated phenolic wood that is highly resistant to moisture, it is very light so that anyone can manipulate it to place it wherever they want. It has a capacity for a total of 20 kg of vegetables and can be used in any climate. It can be located in the kitchen or in any ventilated place that does not get direct sun.

Our vision.

According to a United Nations report, more than 40% of food production is lost before being consumed and the same is lost in our homes, or because we buy more than what is needed and it rots before consuming it, or I forget when we take it out rotten, because we forget it was there and also others are lost by freezing.

Fruits and vegetables do not go in the fridge because the cold damages them. The only foods that need cold and go in the fridge are meat, fish, milk and their derivatives.

The challenge is to achieve a small change in customs in the population, not to throw everything in the fridge when we arrive from the market. In our country Argentina, an average of between 30 and 60 dollars per month and per family is wasted, in fruit and vegetables, for 13 million families there are 780 million dollars that we lose per month, not counting the environmental damage that this garbage produces that in Landfills generate Methane Gas, the main cause of climate change due to the Greenhouse Effect and the electricity we save.

Have you ever or more, found rotten or frozen fruits or vegetables in your fridge? Surely yes, this project is aimed at families, we believe that all houses should have La Caja Verde, but also restaurants, schools and in any place where fruits and vegetables are stored for cooking, we propose a new experience when cooking with hand and as freshly harvested vegetables, using this system that guarantees to keep them for more than 2 weeks.

How to preserve vegetables without cold.

Only using the interaction between the same plants, (Allelopathy) sand and water. It does not use electricity.

Eggs, fruits and tubers.

Eggs, although their shell seems to have an impermeable surface, it has millions of pores and in the refrigerator they absorb odor and other substances that can modify their taste.
Fruits give off Ethylene gas that, in moderate contact, delays the generation of sprouts on the surface of potatoes, sweet potatoes and tubers in general, inhibiting ripening.

Meaty Vegetables.

Fleshy tomatoes, zucchini, zucchini, browns, peppers, aubergines, cucumbers, etc., which in their composition have a lot of water, and it is the loss of that moisture that ruins it, they become rough and lose their consistency. We replace that loss of water by getting wet with a water source.

Stem roots.

On the lower shelf are located onions, fennel, beets and are located only with the root hairs buried, the air should not give it, the sand does not need to be wet.


We place citrus fruits apart because the amount of Ethylene released by these kinds of fruits from being close to other fruits would accelerate the ripening process of the rest.

The Short Roots and Long Leaves.

The peculiarity of this species is that the air corrupts them, removing their texture and with the loss of moisture their firmness. Beets, radish, green onion, celery, leek, etc. In these vegetables we are going to preserve them from the air and we achieve this by burying ourselves, the whole body of the root is always buried.

The Longest Roots.

These roots go with a greater amount of sand to cover them in their entirety and are the carrot, radicheta, radish go with their entire body buried.

The Green Box is ideal for areas in development and where there is no electricity, in addition its price is a quarter of the price of a normal refrigerator and where access to electricity constantly and continuously is a luxury in many countries. In the world in many places there is no electricity, it can also be used in humanitarian disasters to help those most in need.
