A fantastic European project: In its first year of testing, the SR2000 tidal turbine generated 3 GWh of renewable energy without a hitch in the most extreme conditions.
It has weathered Scotland’s worst storms in recent years while producing clean energy efficiently and continuously. We are talking about the SR2000, the most powerful floating tidal turbine ever built in the world.
The European project Flotec (Floating Tidal Energy Commercialization) has been testing it since the summer of 2017 at the European Marine Energy Center (EMEC) in the Scottish Orkney Islands. And the first results have hit the mark: in 12 months of testing, this 2 MW unit was able to produce 3 GWh of electricity from tidal energy.
Twelve months of continuous and constant operation, covering the equivalent annual electricity demand of some 830 UK households and, over several days, more than 25% of the electricity demand of the Orkney Islands.
For Scotrenewables Tidal Power, the company that leads the Flotec consortium, this is an unprecedented achievement. The electricity supplied exceeds the total contribution made in the last 12 pilot projects to wave and tidal power generation.
Combining these figures with those of MeyGen – the Pentland Firth project that has produced more than 8 GWh per year – provides ” convincing proof of the availability of clean tidal energy .”
The phenomenal performance of the SR2000, ”explains Andrew Scott, CEO and project coordinator at Scotrenewables Tidal Power,“ has set a new benchmark for the tidal industry. Although it is a research and development project, and being our first large-scale turbine, its first year of testing has provided a level of performance close to that of widely used mature renewable technologies.
With the support of the European Horizon 2020 program, Scotrenewables Tidal Power plans to build an industrial-scale production facility for the new floating turbines.
The SR2000 has completed its work by proving that we have breakthrough technology and that we will now devote all of our attention and resources to building that success with a product that we are confident will bring to life a new industry, built around a predictable, renewable energy source.
